Paul was so important that he was sometimes referred to as an Apostle, though he was not one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus Christ. In sacred art St. Paul is usally depicted with a sword, as shown in his image on this Apostle spoon. Apostle spoons received their name because each is surmounted by a small figure of one of the Apostles bearing the symbol associated with him.
