The Third Praetorian Cohort

The Roman Signifer 100 A.D. Model! Authentic in design and details! Hand-crafted and hand-painted! (4 1/2" tall)

During the siege of Numantia, Scipio Aemilianus formed a personal bodyguard of 500 men. These became known as the Praetorian Guard, after the praetorium, the area of the camp where the general's tent was pitched. The Emperor Augustus (27BC-14AD) formed these Praetorians into a special bodyguard for himself and increased their number to about nine cohorts (4500 men).

To distinguish this Signifer from other fighting troops, he wore a dagged mail shirt (lorica hamata) over a tunic stead of segmental armour. A sword of the 'Pompeii' type was worn on his right side, suspended from a leather baldric. Animal skins were worn over the helmet with bearskins being popular with legionaries and feline pelts with Praetorians. His standard was decorated with silvered and gilt bronze plaques and figures, and he had a small round shield on his back for protections.
