(4 1/2" tall) During the siege of Numantia, Scipio Aemilianus formed a personal bodyguard of 500 men. These became known as the Praetorian Guard, after the praetorium, the area of the camp where the general's tent was pitched. The Emperor Augustus (27BC-14AD) formed these Praetorians into a special bodyguard for himself and increased their number to about nine cohorts (4500 men). To distinguish this Signifer from other fighting troops, he wore a dagged mail shirt (lorica hamata) over a tunic stead of segmental armour. A sword of the 'Pompeii' type was worn on his right side, suspended from a leather baldric. Animal skins were worn over the helmet with bearskins being popular with legionaries and feline pelts with Praetorians.
