The Roman Signifer Legion XIV Model!
Authentic in design and details! Hand-crafted and hand-painted! (6 1/2" tall)
Below the centurionate, the main officers were the principales. These included the optio, who was the centurion's second in command; the standard bearers, among whom each legion had one aquiliter who bore the eagle; and one signifer for each century who also acted as the unit's banker.
This signifer was armed with a gladius sword and a dagger.
He wore a mail hauberk and had strips of leather as protection of his thighs and upper arms. His masked helmet was very similar to the bronze cavalry sports helmets and was probably worn to show the standard bearer's position as guardian of an object of spiritual importance. Animal skins were worn over the helmet with bearskins being popular with legionaries and the geline pelts with Praetorians. He carried the century standard (signum) and had a small round shield on his back for protection.
