Augustus (27 BC- AD14), Rome's first emporer, who kept on his Praetorian Cohorts from the period of the civil wars and so created an imperial guard. In 2 BC, he placed the individual cohorts and their tribunes under the overall command of two Roman Knights with the title of 'Prefect'. "The scene in the centre of the breast plate of the Prima Porta depicts the future Emporer Tiberius, in general's uniform, receiving the return of a lost eagle from the Parthians in 20 BC.
