Augustus (27 BC- AD14), Rome's first emporer, who kept on his Praetorian Cohorts from the period of the civil wars and so created an imperial guard. In 2 BC, he placed the individual cohorts and their tribunes under the overall command of two Roman Knights with the title of 'Prefect'.
"The scene in the centre of the breast plate of the Prima Porta depicts the future Emporer Tiberius, in general's uniform, receiving the return of a lost eagle from the Parthians in 20 BC. His parazonium is carried at mid- chest level, evidentky thrust into the linen band round his cuirass, and he can be seen to be gripping the handle between the forefingers and thumb."- The Praetorian Guard by Dr. Boris Rankov & Richard Hook.
