AH6710 The Pretorian Cavalry Wooden Shield (47" x 27") from the First Dacian War (AD 101/2) The Roman Pretorian Cavalry, the private bodyguards of the Roman Emperors, were known to have used these particular hexagonal shields, also known as Auxillary Shields For Cavalry Alae, 1st Century AD. Hexagonal shields are thought to have been of Germanic origin but are not infrequent on Roman Cavalry Tombstones.
