Florence and Fiesole
Through the Centuries
with Transparent Overlays
of Archaeological Sites
See Florence and Fiesole through the centuries with this wonderful 77 page book, including 18 transparent overlays of archaeological sites! Wonderful historical information and beautiful full-color pictures of monuments and landmarks.
Visitors to our cities, steeped in history and with their wealth of art, do not always feel their expectations are fulfilled and questions answered by the old-fashioned type of guide book which limits itself to listing and describing monuments and sites, without making their part in the city's history come alive. Usually civic history is dealt with briefly in a separate chapter. The desire to know what places looked like at different times in their pasts, before being transformed to a greater or lesser extent, is completely unsatisfied. We therefore decided to trace the evolution of tow particularly important towns, Florence and it's beautiful 'younger sister' even in more ancient, Fiesole, once a major Etruscan metropolis, from antiquity to the present day, making clear links between everything that has been written about them, and the flow of historical events. Reconstructions are printed onto transparent sheets so the reader may see how building and areas looked at various times in their long history, and get a better idea of what the past was really like. The reconstructions are a balanced combination of historical and archaeological research (texts, ancient maps, and documents from the numerous archaeological excavations) and the artist's imagination, which synthesises all the documentary evidence. Take the tour in the heart of Florence, in the Piazza del Duomo, going on a journey backwards through time, starting with the complex story of the grandiose cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, then going further back through the pre-existing Basilica of Santa Reparata to the Roman period, when this area was an elegant residential district. And once inside the atmosphere of ancient Florence, the read can accompany us on a fascination journey through time.
