The Ponte dei Sospiri or Bridge of Sighs, connects the New Prisons to the Palazzo Ducale. It was built in 1602 by the will of Doge Marino Grimani. Its name is the result of legends and literary works, which spoke of the horrible tortures that prisoners faced in the area known as the Piombi and Pozzi, which were part of the Old Prisons. There was a time in fact when prisoners waiting for their trial would cross the bridge to get to the courtrooms, which were inside the Palazzo Ducale. Built in stone, enclosed and covered, the bridge reveals a strikingly unique baroque style structure: inside of it there are two corridor passages divided by a wall running lengthwise to the Bridge: one of the passages links the Prisons to the rooms of the Magistracies, while the other leads into the Halls of the Avogaria.
